Tetragraphs for Kids: 1,000+ Practice Words & a Points-Based Tetragraph Builder Game
A tetragraph is four letters that team up to make just one sound — the "tion" in "nation," the "sion" in "vision," the "eigh" in "weigh." It's the same idea as a trigraph (three letters, one sound — see our Trigraphs post), just one letter longer. Below is a complete, teacher-ready tetragraph word bank with tap-to-hear audio on every word, plus the Byrugani Tetragraph Builder — a drag-and-drop game with points, streaks, badges and hints.
Why "-tion" and "-sion" get their own giant word families
Most tetragraphs on this page are word endings rather than beginnings — "-tion" and "-sion" alone cover hundreds of English words, because they're how English turns action words into naming words (educate → education). A few, like "eigh" and "ough," are trickier: the same four letters can sound different from word to word ("through" vs. "though" vs. "cough"), so it helps to say each one slowly and listen closely rather than guess from spelling alone.
