Trigraphs for Kids: 1,000+ Practice Words & a Points-Based Trigraph Builder Game

A trigraph is three letters that team up to make just one sound — the "tch" in "catch," the "igh" in "night," the "are" in "care." That's different from a digraph (two letters, one sound — see our Digraphs post) and different again from a three-letter blend like "str" or "scr," where all three letter-sounds stay audible (see our Blends post). Below is a complete, teacher-ready trigraph word bank with tap-to-hear audio on every word, plus the Byrugani Trigraph Builder — a drag-and-drop game with points, streaks, badges and hints.

Trigraphs vs. Digraphs vs. 3-Letter Blends

Three ways three letters can behave: a trigraph like "tch" or "igh" makes one single sound. A 3-letter blend like "str" in "street" or "scr" in "scream" keeps all three letter-sounds separate and audible — those already live in our Blends post, so we won't repeat them here. And a digraph is the two-letter version of a trigraph's idea. Mixing these three up is the most common trigraph confusion for young readers — it helps to say each word slowly and count how many sounds you actually hear.
